The History of the Philly Cheesesteak
The origins of the Philly Cheesesteak can be traced back to 1930, when Pat and Harry Olivieri created a sandwich with sliced beef and grilled onions. The brothers owned a hot dog stand in South Philadelphia and decided to create a new sandwich to satisfy their customers. Their creation soon became popular with their regulars, and before long the sandwich was being sold all over Philadelphia.
The popularity of the Philly Cheesesteak grew over the years, and soon the sandwich was being sold all over the United States. It has even become a staple of many restaurant menus. In the early 2000s, the sandwich underwent a resurgence in popularity, and many variations of the original have been created.
The traditional Philly Cheesesteak is made with thinly sliced steak, melted cheese, grilled onions, and a roll. The steak is usually cooked on a flattop grill, and the cheese is melted over the top. Many restaurants also offer variations on the original recipe, such as adding peppers or mushrooms to the sandwich.
Tips for Making the Best Philly Cheesesteak
1. Use Thinly Sliced Steak: Thinly sliced steak is essential for the best Philly cheesesteak. You want the steak to cook quickly and evenly, and thinly sliced steak will do just that.
2. Choose the Right Bread: The type of bread you choose is also important. The most popular choice is a long, soft Italian roll. Make sure you get a fresh loaf so your sandwich doesn’t become soggy.
3. Add the Cheese: A cheesesteak wouldn’t be a cheesesteak without cheese! The most popular type of cheese to use is Cheez Whiz, though you can also use American, Provolone, and even mozzarella.
4. Spice It Up: To kick up the flavor, add some sautéed peppers and onions. You can also add some hot sauce or Worcestershire sauce to give it an extra kick.
5. Grill the Steak: Once you have your steak, onions, and peppers ready, it’s time to cook! The best way to do this is to heat up a griddle or skillet, add some oil, and then cook the steak and vegetables until they are cooked through.
6. Assemble Your Cheesesteak: Now it’s time to assemble your sandwich! Spread some cheese on the roll, add the steak and vegetables, and top it off with more cheese. Put the sandwich on the griddle and let it cook until the cheese is melted and the bread is toasted.
7. Enjoy! Now you’re ready to enjoy your delicious Philly cheesesteak!
